Yahoo! CEO Marissa Mayer was wrong

By Cynthia Good

Marissa Mayer’s latest move to ban telecommuting at Yahoo! is an example of outdated thinking that is certain to cost the company in reputation, recruitment and retention.

This decision takes a direct hit at working mothers, in particular.

While Mayer has a private (yes, we know she paid for it personally) in-office nursery for her newborn, her co-workers, with significantly lower salaries, now have to put their children in daycares and latchkey programs.

A Bittersweet Send-Off

This weekend we took our son, Alden, to college for the very first time.

Seems like just yesterday at age 15, he moved downstairs into the “man-cave”, as we called it. It fast became a safe hangout for Alden and his many friends. He felt so grown up, independent and far away moving down there. Even on Friday and Saturday nights, they all gathered at the house – in the cave.

Augusta National – Now in the Game!

By Cynthia Good

It took a while. Too long, many say. But at least they did it!

Augusta National Golf Club has officially changed its male-only membership policy, after 80 years. The home of the Masters, the most popular golf championship, welcomed its first two female members this week – former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and South Carolina business woman Darla Moore. Pregnant at Work - In the 21st Century

By Cynthia Good

Do I have any trepidation that Marissa Mayer, brand-new CEO of Yahoo! is not up to the job because she is six months pregnant? Frankly, I find the question ridiculous! This woman is a professional. If anything, she'll make an extra effort because she knows everyone is watching.

Facebook COO, Sheryl Sandberg, will be the eighth member of the board. She’s spent four years at the company.

Criticism for the lack of women at the world’s most popular social network has hurt their reputation. After all, most Facebook users are….you guessed it: Women!

My Maddening Mammogram

By Cynthia Good

A few minutes after 7 a.m., heading out the door, my husband calls out, “Wow. They sure start those mammograms early.” Thing is, they told me it wouldn’t take as long if I got there first.

After dropping off my youngest son at school I head over bright and early for my 7:50 a.m. appointment. It has been a while, actually a few years, since the last one. I wasn’t sure exactly how much time had passed, just that I didn’t look forward to doing it again.

On the Road Again

Traveling with Little PINK Book CEO, Cynthia Good

Business travel for women is a big deal. We love it and hate it. It’s great to get away and explore new places, meet new people, expand our work-scope and world-view. But it’s also tough on the body, the family and the piling-up workload back at the office.

Celebrating Women of Color

When you meet Sam's Club CEO Roz Brewer, she greets you with a warm smile. Always wearing something elegant and professional but never stuffy, she's the kind of successful woman I admire most. Not for her outfit or even her demeanor, but because she is genuine, sharp, compassionate and courageous.
