5 Healthy Daily Habits to Practice at Work

Sometimes we get too busy at work to remember our health. We have hundreds of emails to reply, calls to answer, documents to sign, deadlines to meet, and so much more. By the time you get home, all you want is a hot shower, hot food, and a warm bed. The routine goes on and on until you burn out and you feel like hanging your boots.

Did you know that you can be more productive and have better body health by developing simple habits at work? Here are some of the habits that you can adopt at work for a healthy work-life balance.

Drink Water
You probably have heard the age-old advice that you should take at least eight glasses of water every day, right? But how many people remember to take eight glasses of water?

Drinking water is essential for your health – it can help you lose weight seeing that you take fewer calories if you take enough water. Water also improves your skin and makes you feel energized.

An article published on WebMD notes that when you take in more water, you will feel filled up and end up taking less food. This can help you in your weight loss journey significantly. If you run a busy schedule at work with less time for a workout, taking water can help you shed those extra calories. Find a way to take more water at work.

 Take Health Breaks and Eat Healthy Meals
Do you eat from your desk or you take a break and eat elsewhere? Majority of people take their meals from their offices as they sign more documents or answer a few calls – which is not advisable. Take a health break for 10 am tea, take another at lunch break – go outside the office and have a healthy meal. If you are to take food from your desk, stop everything, and concentrate on your healthy meal. This way, you will not have to overeat.

Whether you are eating take-outs, meals packed from home, or meals provided in the office, ensure your meals are always balanced. Substitute unhealthy fats with healthy fats, cut down your calorie intake (unless you are trying to build muscles) and instead take more veggies and fruits and ensure you take enough minerals. If you’re looking to stay lean and build some lean muscle mass, whey protein can help increase and preserve lean muscle mass. Walk More
Have you ever heard of the sitting syndrome? It is this condition where you feel like sitting all day – on average, working people sit between 7.7 and 15 hours every day.

You do not have to do everything in your office while seated; you can walk around or stand and do some filing. Sitting for long periods can cause metabolic syndrome, increase chances of obesity, and increase risks of death from the cardiovascular disease according to Mayo Clinic.

At work, you can take regular toilet breaks or walk around your office when you are pondering on issues. During tea and lunch breaks, walk around or outside the office for ten or more minutes.

Reduce Clutter
How much clutter is on your work desk? A framed photo, your computer, task bin, a stationery holder, a piece of art, files, books, and much more? Not only that, how much work do you have to do before leaving your desk and how much of that is essential?

There is a lot you can do in a day. Clutter tasks such as social media might end up taking two to three hours of your day. Toxic relationships at work and lunch hour gym memberships you never use also clutter your day. 

A good habit is focusing on what is essential and having a shorter to-do-list and keeping your desk clean. This lets you focus on what is vital. Use the 80/20 rule to eliminate clutter from your days at the office.

Maintain a Growth Mindset and Journal Your Growth
According to Elon Musk, you need to accept that you are wrong and work towards being less wrong. When you develop a growth mindset, you will take every challenge as an opportunity to learn and to grow.

Developing a growth mindset means taking on new challenges and working these challenges until you get a solution. Read self-improvement books during your free time in the office and take online courses that you can cover within the short breaks you get.

Lastly, journal your progress – it will help you maintain focus on your goals.
