Are You Contacting The Local Media?

If you are a small business owner, one of the best ways to build buzz is by contacting the local media.

This is a great way to hone your pitching skills with a smaller, media venue and create relationships that can help your business grow.

But how do you start these PR activities?

1. Conduct Research.
To begin, research your local media venues and figure out who writes about your industry or “beat.” Look at archived stories online and appropriate contact information. If you can’t really find anyone who covers your area of expertise, try contacting the managing editor or assignment editor. These people can get your story to the right reporter.

2. Figure Out What You Are Going to Say.
You may want to start by simply calling the media member and introducing yourself. Briefly explain who you are and what you have to offer for future stories. You can also pitch a story idea. Whatever you do, just remember to: Provide information pertinent to the local community. This is the focus of the local publication and what the editors want to hear about. For example, you can discuss a national trend or story that relates to a local issue, offer a case study based on a customers or provide an editorial pertinent to one of the publication’s recent stories.

3. Document and Follow-Up.
After you talk to a media member, be sure to make a note of the details in your media database. Then, follow up via e-mail or snail-mail. Thank them for their time and send a gentle reminder of the value you can provide their audience. Then, be sure to keep in touch with your new media contact over time to keep the relationship going. Send valuable news tips and information, offer feedback and provide assistance. Since most, local media-companies are tight on cash, they will probably appreciate your help.

Results Await.

By reaching out to the local press, you can hone your pitching skills and start building valuable relationships for future, story opportunities. Then, you will feel more comfortable talking to bigger media venues and generating more press for your products and services.
