In support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, here’s how to get back on your feet:

 “Focus on everything that’s good in your life and surround yourself with positive people. Laugh every day and remember that Superwoman exists only on television,” says Roberta Dehman Hershon, executive director of Hope In Bloom, Inc., a nonprofit that plants free gardens at the homes of breast cancer patients.

After fighting cancer with all of your strength, settling back into normal life can be difficult – especially going back to work. The trick is: “Set yourself up to succeed!” says Hershon. “If you need a break, take it. Finally, give yourself permission to accomplish tasks at a pace that works for you.”

She suggests sending an e-mail to colleagues on your first day back, “thanking them for their concern and support during your illness.” This will help break the ice and set the tone for future interactions. Concentrate on rebuilding your physical strength with exercise and a healthy diet, and consider joining a support group.

When setting back into your position, experts suggest communicating with your employer about your specific physical needs and trying to conserve energy when at home so you can give 100 percent at work.
