Best Industries for Women in 2013

STEM fields – science, technology, math and engineering – where women are grossly underrepresented?

Unsurprisingly, these industries are among the best places for women to work this year.

Experts at Randstad U.S. reveal that IT spending is expected to exceed $2 trillion in 2013.

Software developing jobs are projected to grow 30 percent from 2010 to 2020, faster than all other occupations’ average growth.

“Even in a tough economy, women in STEM fields can do anything imaginable, from creating apps, to developing algorithms and code that solve complex business problems, to researching disease-curing antibodies or designing water and solar-powered airplanes,” says Karen Purcell, engineer and author.

Why STEM?

“Companies are quick to hire intelligent women with STEM experience, because these fields are saturated with men,” says Vanessa Smith, career services manager at Employment BOOST.

Smith witnessed this selection process firsthand when her friends pursuing STEM industries received several job offers, averaging nearly $70,000, prior to commencement. That’s nearly twice what jobs pay in the humanities and social sciences.

Interested in moving into one of these industries?

Smith suggests an online program in one of these fields. “It will be demanding, but knowing you’ll be one of the few women in the field is empowering.”

Also, having a mentor in the career you’re pursuing “can guide you, answer questions and serve as a long-lasting source of information,” says Purcell. “Mentors can be found by participating in STEM-related national organizations, such as AWM, AWIS, SWE and WITI.”

“You might take 3 steps back to take one forward,” Smith remarks, “but in the long run, if you’re committed to your new career, quality of life increases and career satisfaction follows.”
