Bring your baby to work day (today!) is the fourth Thursday in April when employers open their doors to little ones.
But, what if working moms could take their newborns to work every day?
According to Babies At Work, there are 184 active baby-inclusive organizations.
“There are several benefits for moms who bring their babies to work,” says Debra Shigley, author of The Go-Getter Girl’s Guide.
“One, moms can nurse without having to pump.
Being away from an infant can also be troubling for first-time parents.
“Having the baby with you melds two worlds and encourages work/life agreement,” adds Shigley.
Companies benefit, too.
Moms are more apt to come back to work instead of taking a long maternity leave.
The retention factor is higher, too.
“Employees who know that their employers support their family life are more likely to stick around longer,” said Shigley.
These programs can also serve as effective recruitment tools.
“What mom or potential mom wouldn’t want to work somewhere that will be supportive of her decision to have children?” Shigley points out.
Fearing the “motherhood tax?”
“Unfortunately, when the dad brings his sick kid to work, everyone thinks he’s a great family man. For women, it’s often the opposite,” Shigley notes.
Avert false assumptions by staying on top of your game.
This means evaluating your baby’s temperament to schedule effectively, ensuring maximum productivity.
“We’re behind the times on maternity leave across the globe,” explains Shigley.
“This alternative can integrate employee productivity and family values, while helping the company’s bottom line.”
Looks like an economic win-win.
