Do You Do Your Own Marketing?

You could be wasting more valuable resources than you think.

In the past few weeks, numerous people in my life have been diagnosed with cancer and other illnesses, had hospital visits and even died.

It’s just a reminder that no matter your age, no matter how healthy you are and no matter how “good” things are right now… everything can change in a second. And it got me thinking about how I spend my time each day and what’s really important.

As the new year begins, it’s a great time to review how many hours you spend on things that simply don’t work, especially all of the things you do yourself to “save time and money.” For example:

Is your website working for you?

If you have one of those template websites for your business, does it really help improve your credibility and sales?

Sure. Most of these sites are inexpensive and are up and running within hours. However, they may not give you the flexibility to add your own content with search engine optimization quickly… or track results.

Without the ability to provide customized and unique content to your target market via your website, your brand will not stand out from the competition. And with this in mind…

What’s happening with your social marketing?

You set up your Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, and other accounts and were ready to reach out to customers regularly. And let me guess… these social media accounts are pretty much sitting there with a few posts you added when you remembered to do so. Right?

If this sounds familiar, don’t worry. You’re not alone. Most entrepreneurs do this and get caught up in the “social media buzz” of their competitors. However, if you have social media sites, you need to use them.

The key is to figure out which ones reach your target market and focus on those accounts. Social media can bring in new customers, but you need to have a strategy for actual results.

Do you send out emails, newsletters, surveys, and more?

Many small business owners purchase an email marketing service (usually combined with their website hosting service) to send out newsletters and emails for them. However, this can backfire if the appropriate content, language, tone and style for your business are not used.

For example, many of these services send out template responses that cannot be changed, or they automatically distribute newsletters and emails. Worst of all, they use the same newsletters, emails and content for all of their clients (your competition included).

There is no unique sales message pertinent to your business marketing goals, and your customers know they are getting a standard document that goes straight to the trash!

Do you really have time to offer current and targeted SEO content?

For your marketing to work, you need to have specific tactics to reach specific goals. This involves planning, writing personal and unique content, using SEO research and keywords appropriately, tracking results, and making fast changes when necessary.

If you don’t have the time to do this, you can make a bad impression and lose sales to the competition. If you do your own marketing, this whole process takes a lot of time and effort to work accordingly.

So what are you supposed to do with a limited budget?

Hire professional people to help you with your specific needs. There are many, excellent SEO content strategists out there who can give you fantastic marketing content at different price points. While you may spend extra money, you won’t waste time on activities that don’t work… or even worse, give your business a bad reputation online. Plus, you’ll see sales increase.

But even more important, you’ll give yourself more time.

Instead of wasting hours on website content, marketing emails, social media posts, and more that don’t work, you’ll actually have more time to spend what you love doing. No more long hours at the office. You can spend extra time with family members and friends. You can travel, do your favorite hobbies or just relax. And that’s what really matters. After all, life is too short to do your own marketing!
