Recently a group of managers met for a conversation about strategic networking. In their concerns and solutions you’ll find a tip that is just what you need.
I won’t know anyone.
Isn’t that the point. We go to networking events to meet new people, so turn on your mindset of exploration and head out to meet at least one new person. Setting a reasonable goal will quell the fear.
No one will want to talk with me. OR What should I talk about?
Well, a bit of preparation comes in handy.
Develop a few general conversation starters. You’ll find some at our earlier post.
Have your Courageous ASK™ in your hip pocket.
Draw on current information of interest to the group that’s convening.
If all else fails, focus on asking the other person about herself. Most of us like talking about ourselves.
I don’t want to get stuck with someone.
Conversation enders are a great solution. Practice authentic comments to excuse yourself. For example:
I’ve enjoyed our conversation, but I promised to spend a few minutes with who just arrived.
Thank you for the time we’ve spent together, I’m sure you have other people to connect with.
Could I have your business card. I’d like to continue this conversation later.
I don’t want to be a leech.
OK, maybe you should set a goal of meeting 2 new people! Seriously, you can use a conversation ender to detach yourself from someone comfortable, too.
I forget names.
Many people do, don’t fret about it. Master the art of graciously admitting that you know you’ve met before, but can’t retrieve the name.
enJOY the summer and Network ON!
