Help Thy Sister

You have a big heart. You’re great at taking care of your family, employees, friends and community. But the tragedy in Haiti reminds us that women around the world don’t always have a sister to lean on.

Muadi Mukenge, Program Director for Sub-Saharan Africa for the Global Fund for Women (GFW), says GFW has supported women’s groups in Haiti for the past 18 years and is committed to addressing women’s specific needs following the recent earthquake. “There is an opportunity now to really address [economic] issues – which have more impact on women than men – in the rebuilding process and reshape foreign policy toward Haiti to promote development.” The Global Fund for Women works through 9 different organizations in Haiti that support women and children who might be overlooked by mainstream programs.

Want to help?

Of the 60,000+ pregnant women in Haiti, 15 percent will require emergency care for life-threatening complications, according to the United Nations. Women’s Refugee Action, Examiner.com and the UNFPA tell what women and children need to get back on their feet – including maternal care, reproductive health care and hygiene products.

If you want to volunteer, Idealist.org and Hands on Network list relief agencies and things to keep in mind before donating your time – from money to your physical and emotional endurance.

Already made your contribution? Get ready for tax season – here’s how to make your donation tax-deductible.
