At the end of a long workday, many of us can’t wait to hit the sheets. But after going nonstop, it’s hard for many women to shut off their brains and fall asleep. The mind sifts through the stresses of the workday right as we’re trying to rest.
Fewer than half of all Americans get enough sleep. So, how can ambitious women unwind? Relaxing and changing our focus after hours helps.
Even after work, “I turn to [basketball] when I am stressed out,” says Yelena Leuchanka, center for the WNBA Atlanta Dream basketball team. “Basketball is… a great form of exercise, and it keeps me balanced.” Being active daily, even just taking a brisk walk, reduces stress so you can get some shut-eye at the end of the day.
Sleep deprivation not only affects your job performance. It can lead to diabetes, obesity and even traffic accidents. Studies show keeping your bedroom free of anything work-related and turning off the TV before you hit the hay will help your brain shut off.
Getting up around the same time each morning and maintaining a sleep routine (eat, shower, read, bed) prepares your body and mind to slow down each night.
