Not receiving the recognition you deserve? Still getting passed over for promotions and awards?
Studies show men are more likely to acknowledge and highlight their attributes and achievements. They also get promoted more often.
What’s the take-away for us?
Perhaps it’s a lesson from the guys – and time to start tooting your own horn.
Michelle Lederman, Author of The 11 Laws of Likability, shares her advice on how to sing your own praises.
“Often, the best way to shine a light on you is to shine one on someone else,” says Lederman.
What have your co-workers done that deserves recognition?
Highlight it and others are more likely to notice what you’ve been doing.
“Avoid mudslinging. Speaking negatively of others not only fails to showcase your skills, it also suggests a lack of professional demeanor,” says Lederman.
Appearing gossipy and immature can hurt your reputation.
“Back your claims up with data,” she adds.
Keep tabs. Lederman says it’s evidence that you can succeed in the role you’re trying to take on. “Use it to your advantage.”
Lastly, “Be a fearless advocate for you. Be bold and strive for the goals you’ve outlined for yourself.” And Lederman insists confidence is essential.
