If you want to give yourself a higher chance of being employed, you need to increase your employability. No matter what environment you’d like to work in, there are lots of different things you can do to make yourself more employable. Take a look to see what you can do:
Do Courses and Workshops
It goes without saying that the more skills you have, the more employable you are to people. Depending on the kind of area you want to work in, different courses and workshops will help you to improve your skills and become a better choice. You can do a range of courses and workshops, whatever you feel will help you with your career in the industry you’d like to be in.
Look the Part
You must look the part if you want to land the job of your dreams. In the corporate world, dressing in a suit and smart clothing is the best thing to do. However, if you want to improve your employability in the fashion world, you’ll need to dress the part for that. Do lots of research and find your ‘work style’ to help you.
Attend Seminars and Conferences
Attend lots of different seminars and conferences to help you to network, make contacts, and spread the word that you’re looking for a job. Listen to talks, make notes, and just go out of your way to learn as much as possible from these conferences as you can. You may need to travel for some of them, but it’ll be worth it when you see just how much you can learn.
Network
Don’t just network at conferences. Get yourself on Linkedin and network with other professionals in your area. Stay in touch with people you know who could help you to land a job. See everybody you meet as an opportunity for networking. Hand out your business card. Be bold!
Know What You Need to Improve On
Knowing what you need to improve on is the key to improving your employability. You can then go out of your way to work on this, and give an honest answer during interview. Many interviewers hate it when you give cliche answer, such as ‘I’m a perfectionist’. If you’re unsure, having career coaching or something similar can help you to touch on improvements.
Find a Mentor
A mentor who you can go to with questions will be a huge help while you’re trying to land a job in the industry you want to be in. Somebody who has been there and done it will be a great asset, so find somebody you can turn to for advice. Many people will be happy to help you providing you play your cards right.
If you use these tips properly, you’ll increase your employability almost instantly. It won’t be long before an employer sees what an asset you are and decides to snap you up. Focus on these things and you’ll never be stuck when you’re in need of a job.
