Do You Motivate Individuality?

As a leader, you want to be attentive and nurture everyone you supervise. Problem is – everyone has unique needs, and one size doesn’t fit all.

“Each individual has different motivations and goals,” says Jill Smart, chief HR officer for Accenture. “We have a tool called the Personal Engagement List. It helps me understand each team member’s personal priorities. Then I can work with each team member to boost their satisfaction in their high-priority areas, which leads to increased motivation and engagement overall.”

Here’s how:

YoungEntrepreneur.com recommends meeting individually with employees, help them clarify personal goals and identify the skills they need to achieve those goals.

Allbusiness.com suggests creating a link between the organization and personal objectives. Work with each employee on a career plan that considers skills and goals.

Recognize employees as whole people, celebrate their roles outside work, and acknowledge Life/Work boundaries. Find out their personal priorities and cater to those while keeping the company’s performance in mind, suggests Businessweek.com.
