Everyone you work with or for or who works with you is a member of your strategic network. So is anyone else, inside and outside the company who has a stake in your achieving your goals. That is beautifully illustrated in this video that features Pattie Sellers of FORTUNE moderating a panel that includes EVP, Worldwide Business Development and Innovation, Kristin Peck and Xerox Chief Strategy Officer Uta Werner. My favorite quotes are from Uta when she spoke about the importance of managing up:
“Managing up is not politicking or scheming. The core of it is, wherever you’re working, you informed on what you’re doing and what you’re finding.”
“Managing up is keeping yourself broadly informed so you have all the perspectives so when you do open your mouth and opine about something it’s as broadly based as you can be.”
By the way, there’s nothing wrong with being strategic! It’s what you’re paid to do.
Network ON!
