Klutz-Proof Outfitting for Networking Events

When you prepare for a networking event, you probably dress in a way that projects the “brand” that you want to be known for. I know that I am thoughtful about how I outfit myself, but my colleague Victoria Waterman recently brought my outfitting awareness to a new level. She emailed me an outline for a Business Etiquette workshop that she was preparing for a client. In the outline was this topic: “Must-Have Networking Wardrobe and Accessories.”

Now, that rubbed me the wrong way. Being quite the individualist and with a bias toward non-artifice, I bristled at the idea of “must have” clothing and accessories. But Victoria is President of Leading Women in Massachusetts (and an outstanding networker) so I asked what she meant.

Here’s what she wrote – I call it Klutz-Proof Outfitting:

What I refer to as the must haves is “my secret to avoid being a klutz,” a jacket with 2 pockets – one for your cards, one for others. Right pocket for your business cards and the left is empty for new cards. Carry a light shoulder purse so you’re not off balance while trying to juggle a drink, appetizer, napkin while still being able to shake hands. (Frankly, I rarely eat at mingling events because it can be socially awkward.) This networking stuff is serious business. I have outfits I wear exclusively to events. I don’t bother with the biz card holder – too clumsy.

Brilliant! She went on to say that she also keeps a small pen in her pocket for making notes on cards. Now, writing on business cards is frowned upon in certain cultures, so a few mini post-it notes would be a good idea where that’s the case.

So, the next time as you plan for a networking event and you’re wondering “what am I going to wear?” remember Victoria’s advice and plan for a:

1. Jacket with 2 pockets, remember to remove the stitching, or pants with pockets.

2. Small and light shoulder purse (or none at all if you can get away with it).

3. Oh yeah, and don’t forget to load up with your business cards.

Network ON!
