I’m of the Kennedy generation; enchanted by Jack, inspired by Bobby and advocated for by Ted. So, it’s no wonder that I tuned in as often as possible to the tributes and testimonials about the life of Senator Ted Kennedy. Listening, I was struck by not only the grandeur of his legislative accomplishments, but also the consideration in his personal actions. Sure he had a staff to help him nurture his network, but it was his impulse and he extended it to people of importance as well as the common man and woman.
Just as Ted had constituents, so do you. Your co-workers, customers and suppliers are all your constituents. People you meet at industry or professional conferences, others who join you on professional, non-profit or for-profit boards. The networking lesson we can take from Teddy is that there are many ways to strengthened our connections to our constituents. An acknowledgment, a kind word, a letter of support, an action on behalf of another, a piece of advice, an introduction to an ally, a compromise given. Story after story about Ted Kennedy’s life was filled with testimonials from people who were touched and benefited from actions such as these.
So, as you go about your day focused on your goals, remember that with every interaction you are touching the life of another person. Ask yourself what you can do to enrich that life in some way. That’s what nurturing your network is all about.
Joe Biden gave a moving tribute saying about Teddy, that “it was never about him”. Mike Pellerin, who met Teddy briefly at the Kennedy compound, said: “This was a man who did kind things for people whether he knew them or not.”
When it comes to nurturing your network, will people say the same of you?
