Well, this isn’t exactly a live blog (no wifi in the ballroom), but I’ve just left and am excited to share with you the networking wisdom of the fabulous panelists!
Susan Sobbott, President American Express OPEN said this doesn’t have to be a heavy duty mentor, it could be the benefit of “mentoring moments.” At the same time, “If you want a mentor, ask for it… Women need more help because they tend to keep their heads down and do their work when what they need is to look up and around.” She also encouraged the women in the audience to “seek out people who are a little bit ahead of you” and can let you in on the informal rules and she passed along a bit of wisdom from one of her mentors, “It’s not what you know, it’s who knows what you know.”
Taryn Rose, Orthopedic Surgeon & Founder of Taryn Rose Shoes echoed the importance of mentors to fill you in on what you don’t know. She was always 10 minutes behind the men because while she was prepping in the nurse’s changing area, the men were prepping with the attending physicians and getting pre-briefed on the upcoming surgery.
Sheila Stanziale, VP Sales Strategy PepsiCo Foodservice said, “Once you’re good at what you do, shift to building advocates and sponsors… work on influencing others and developing a system of advocates.”
Thanks to Cynthia and all the amazing women of PINK for a fabulous day! Hope to see you at next year’s series.
