Offering your staff a great workplace is fantastic for their motivation and productivity. Plus it’s a place you’ll be proud to bring clients to and showcase as your own. But how exactly do you go about making your office a wonderful place for everyone to spend their day? Read on for a few ideas.
Have a canteen, not a vending machine. This is a big must if your office is in a remote location, or lacks nearby eateries and shops. Staff may come to work earlier in the mornings if there is a good place to eat. They’ll also be able to stick around at lunchtime. Eating with colleagues can help boost relations in the office, and helps your staff make friends away from their own teams. Dining halls also make great spaces for less informal meetings or catch-ups. Vending machines, though they are great, can’t offer fresh fruit and produce. Even if installing a canteen is not viable, have a local sandwich company drop by the office on a daily basis instead.
Keep it clean. Nobody enjoys working in a space that is dirty or messy. It is your responsibility to ensure that they don’t have to. Hire commercial cleaning services for reassurance that the job will get done properly. This way you also know that everything will be maintained, and that staff will be protected from germs and bacteria. Increase efforts over the winter months when your team are most likely to catch colds or viruses. Ensure the cleaning team focus particular effort on cleaning keyboards, mouses and door handles. Doing so will reduce the amount of sick days your staff need, thereby keeping productivity and engagement high.
Consider the finishing touches. Designing and cultivating a beautiful office is great, but what about the last few bits. Don’t miss these out, or you’ll miss them! Add plants to each room to bring the outside in and boost oxygen. Paint a feature wall, or put up a huge chalkboard that staff can illustrate. Give each staff member a mouse mat and place mat with the company logo on. Also, consider colored office chairs, rather than plain black or grey. Red and yellow look great side by side. You could even do a different colored office chair for each floor, or department.
Analyze how your staff are sitting . Sitting at desks all day and typing can cause all sorts of problems for our bodies. Ensure all your staff are sitting correctly. You should provide them with supportive office chairs. Those with arm rests are ideal. You could also consider offering back rests, and foot rests for those whose feet don’t touch the floor. Also, look at computer height; the screen should be level with the user’s eyes. They shouldn’t have to lift their chin up or drop their neck to see comfortably. Finally, look at their arms and wrists. Repetitive strain injury is serious and the effects are painful. Steps should be taken to avoid this happening. Encourage your team to take breaks regularly and have a short walk, even if it just to the kitchen.
