Blame it on Dirty Harry, the Marlboro Man or the maniacal male manager – it seems the idea of machismo is in for an overhaul! In today’s job market, as more women move into the workforce while demanding (and appreciating!) help at home, the traditional concept of masculinity is fading.
“The post-industrial economy is indifferent to men’s size and strength. The attributes that are most valuable today – social intelligence, open communication, the ability to sit still and focus – are… not predominantly male,” says The Atlantic’s “The End of Men.”
Men are becoming more involved in the household, way beyond the title of ‘breadwinner.’ They are now taking
paternity leave, co-parenting and even cooking.
Job stereotypes are slowly disappearing too, as more men are choosing to be teachers, nurses and caretakers than ever before. Due to the economy, men are beginning to expand their horizons and tap into jobs formerly dominated by women.
After an economic downturn, predominately-male jobs such as construction usually bounce back quickly – but this time might be different. These industries, after being bloated by a decade-long housing bubble, are unlikely to regain their strength any time soon, forcing many men to find new careers.
Bonus PINK Link: Not only do women now dominate the workplace, but they may be your best customers. Here’s how to tap into the women market.
