New Year's Resolution

I was researching new Twitter followers using the search wordl “women” and came across an account for a magazine that I happen to enjoy. BUT here’s what its tag was…“If it matters to women, it’s in . Your destination for fashion finds, beauty tips, dating advice and more.”

What’s wrong with that? If all women care about is fashion finds, beauty tips and dating advice we deserve to hit a glass ceiling and make less than men! Furthermore, with all those extra expenses for clothes, accessories, makeup jewelry and the bulk of the burden for child care, you would think that women would care about getting ahead and making great money.

When it comes to getting ahead, you know that one career success factor is the strength of your strategic network, so here is a resolution to consider for the New Year. It is derived from Darren Hardy’s new book the Compound Effect. In it he explains why a single small positive change sustained every day adds up to huge differences over time. It works for weight loss, compound interest, fitness…and for your career!

In 2012, resolve to invest 15 minutes on one of these 5 actions every work day to strengthen your strategic network.

  1. Reflect on your strategic network. Who should you be reaching out to this week? Be sure to think about your internal and your external relationships.
  2. Pass along a sincere compliment to someone in your strategic network (internal or external, direct report, colleague or up the management chain).
  3. Ask a member of your strategic network what you can do to help her/him achieve his/her goal.
  4. Send a thank you to someone who has assisted you.
  5. Reach out to someone new.

It’s only 15 minutes a day, but it can add up to stronger alliances and perhaps thousands of dollars (so you can buy more clothes, jewelry, makeup and accessories).

Here’s to a prosperous, JOY-filled and rewarding New Year.

Network ON!
