Daydreaming of exotic locales while staring at the computer in your cubicle?
Then it may be time to inquire about overseas job opportunities with your company.
Assignments abroad can benefit your career, with the chance to hone existing skills and challenge yourself.
“In the current global marketplace, international job experience can provide significant advantages,” says Julie Butler, a former expatriate and writer at Expat Daily News. “Working abroad enhances qualities such as flexibility, adaptability and self-sufficiency,” she tells Little PINK Book.
Employees with a global perspective have a competitive edge over those without it, with skills like fluency in a foreign language, taking on greater responsibility and thriving in a diverse environment.
All of which lead to upward mobility.
But before you accept an assignment abroad, consider the realities of the offer for yourself and your family.
“Factors like living standards, crime rate, opportunities for personal development and even tax rates in a foreign country should not be overlooked,” cautions Butler.
Know that you and your family will likely encounter differing cultural attitudes, and possibly feelings of isolation. Also, review how often you and your family will realistically be able to visit family back home while living abroad.
