Say Sayonara to Spam

You finally got around to organizing all that clutter on your desk. Then you log into your e-mail, only to find more junk. According to a Symantec’s MessageLabs report, spam represents about 92 percent of all e-mail traffic in the world.

Frustrated? Don’t worry; there are steps you can take to successfully reduce unwanted junk mail so you can get down to work.

Here’s how to keep your Inbox as tidy as your desk:

One option is to use multiple e-mail addresses (one for work, one for personal and one for things like newsletters), and watch out for checkboxes. Not providing your e-mail address in newsgroups, forums, and chats will also help keep away the flood of spam.

Enable free spam filtering to automatically sort unwanted e-mail out of sight. Avoid responding to and opening spam messages. That just confirms your address is valid, McAfee Security says.

Investing in a good anti-spam program and complaining about spam using SpamCop can reduce unwanted e-mail too. You can also set up your account to filter out key words in subject lines, such as “free, click here, subscribe” and “debt.”
