To learn more about artist, Stephanie Henderson, featured at the Maune Contemporary gallery, www.maune.com, we conducted a brief interview. Her work has inspired all the creative for the upcoming PINK Event, What’s Your Bullseye?
Here are some insights from that interview:
1. What are three, specific things women can do now to move them closer to their goals?
1) Support each other! If a friend is having an art show, or giving a lecture, go support her! Or if she’s organized a fundraiser, attend!
2) If you’re serious about your goal, spend all the time you have (and more) working towards it. Working obsessively helps! Nothing can replace working as hard as you possibly can.
3) Remember that if you have a setback, just pivot. Do not be stalled. You will find a new way to reach your goal.
2. What were the biggest obstacles for you?
It’s funny, I haven’t experienced many obstacles except lack of time to paint everything I want to paint. I lie awake at night with new ideas dancing through my mind’s eye, and getting these ideas into paint just takes time.
Though an artist can make her own hours, I’ve settled into a fairly strict routine of starting my workday immediately after morning coffee and painting until late afternoon every weekday and many weekends.
I think if I weren’t in a set routine with my work, or if I dabbled in other activities during the day, I would be stressed about time and productivity.
3. What helped you break through?
Without question, my female friends who friends who bought my work, used it in their houses, and gave me such amazing feedback were the reason I had the confidence to keep painting and showing my work. Also indispensable in the beginning were women like Gregg Irby, of Gregg Irby Gallery in Atlanta, who took a chance on me; Holly Phillips of The English Room blog; and Libby Silvia of Wellesley, MA, who got my work in front of people other than my friends. Later, Atlanta gallery owner Heidi and Ramsey Maune of Maune Contemporary, opened exciting new doors. And finally, I give immense credit to Instagram for its invaluable role in creating exposure.
4. Is there anything else you would like to add?
If you love your work, life is good enough!
