Diana Nyad plans to make history – again. Best known for breaking world records at sea, now at age 62, she attempts to take another crack at becoming the first to swim 103 miles from Cuba to Florida – without a shark cage.
“It’s close to impossible to make it across,” says Nyad in our exclusive interview.
But that won’t stop her.

As soon as conditions are right, the longtime ABC sports commentator who is in four Halls of Fame, will begin the 60 hour journey. It will involve close encounters with sharks, deadly weather and the venomous Box Jellyfish that nearly killed her the last time she attempted it.
Little PINK Book: What causes you to take such risks?
Diana Nyad: I was told: ‘A girl can’t be an athlete.’ Everyone told me that had I been straight instead of gay and more mainstream, I would have gotten much farther ahead. You know what? If that’s what it takes, being someone you’re not, that’s just fine by me.
LPB: How do you motivate your team?
DN: I want them to feel happy in their personal life. Do what turns you on in life. You have to have a passion for it. If you’re just in something because it’s your mother’s idea or for the money, though the paycheck is hard to turn down, get out of it. I know so many miserable, rich people. You’ve got to love what you’re doing.
