My Business

Talking With Twine and Twig

Sisters Elizabeth Stafford White and Jacquelyn Stafford Buckner started their jewelry line in 2013 based on inspiration found in the natural world near their home in Charlotte, North Carolina. Since then, their business has grown into an international brand, landing features in high-profile publications like Vogue, Glamour and Elle. In an exclusive interview, the women shared a bit about their story and some words of wisdom.

How do you keep your designs current and on trend in the constantly changing fashion world?
We are constantly inspired. Whether it is from our five children or an amazing trip, as long as you are inspired and looking at the world differently, you can see new designs. Sunsets seem different in other countries, trees are vibrant shades of green on the islands, the ocean changes blue across the world and the dirt our kids dig up inspires new shades of brown.

That being said, how can other businesses remain current in their own fields?
I think that it is important for all industries to pay attention to what is going on in other fields. For instance, when the ombre trend came out in the hair world, it was not long before it was seen in clothing, then bedding, wallpaper…trends fade into all fields.

How did you use social media to market your brand online?
Social media, especially Instagram, was huge in our early success. We started posting pictures daily about our brand and it was at the time that Instagram was taking off. It has been so great to see friends tag their friends who live across the States or the world to show them our line. We had a true grass roots, word of mouth spreading of our brand, but social media helped take it to the next level and spread quicker.

What is it like working with your sister?
We love working together. It has taken years to figure out how we both work and how our personalities play into our roles, but to get to share your successes with family is something beyond words.

What challenges have you encountered as young business owners?
I’m not sure our age plays into any challenges, but as with any start up, a lot of what you learn is from trial and error so there are many mistakes in between successes.

What are your goals for the company moving forward?
Oh, there are so many! We have so many ideas and not enough days in the week to implement them. As long as we stay inspired and keep dreaming, you will see new designs and ideas come out of Twine & Twig.

What advice would you give to young women who want to start their own business?
You have to LOVE what you do! If you are not passionate about what you are doing, then all of the hard days, long nights, tears, etc. will seem overwhelming. But if you love what you are creating then the time and process is worth the roller coaster ride.

Twine & Twig recently announced their products would soon be available at Belk department stores. Check out their collection here.
