Like a lot of people, you might be a little discontented or disillusioned with your current career, and wondering if things will ever get better in terms of your job satisfaction. Seen as we spend the majority of our time at work, it’s no wonder why so many people are hell-bent on finding greener pastures. Here, we’ve listed a few proven ways that you can improve your future career prospects.
Work on Your Communication
If there’s one skill that will help with your career prospects, no matter what kind of field you’re targeting, then it’s communication. As a professional, your ability to communicate with your co-workers and managers is crucial in any workplace. If you know that your communication skills are lacking somewhat, then working on this could be a great starting point. Make sure that you can speak and write clearly and with confidence, no matter what kind of communication channel you’re using. Possibly the best way to build your communication skills and confidence fast is to get a job that will let you practice them every day, such as working in a call center or some other customer-service role.
Go Back to School
While experience with different roles and responsibilities can certainly take you places, employers are still going to put a lot of emphasis on your formal qualifications. Even if you’ve already got your foot in the door in the field you want to make a career out of, going back to school can be a massive help to expand your knowledge, and make yourself more marketable in the modern-day job market. Obviously, getting an education is much easier when you’re young and free. Now that you’ve got various responsibilities to take care of, full or even part-time day courses may be out of the question. If this is the case, you can always attend night school, or explore the many distance-learning options there are. Online associates degrees, for example, make up a huge industry, and the quality of distance learning has really come a long way in recent years. Whatever it is you need on your CV to make yourself more marketable, there’s sure to be a flexible and practical solution out there for you.
Network, Network, Network
You’ve probably heard that saying “it’s not what you know, but who you know”. There’s a lot of truth in this, and many people have been able to secure their dream job simply through brilliant networking skills. Whether it’s through social media or good-ol’ word of mouth, most people are surrounded by excellent opportunities to brush shoulders with people who could help them find the career of their dreams. Networking will not only build relationships and open your eyes to new job opportunities, but will also teach you more about your industry, and the various nuances that dictate who gets the best spots. Also, the more you do it, the more you’ll learn about successful networking and communication (see the first point). I can’t emphasize the importance of networking enough, so get out there.
