Top SS16 Trends to Try

With Fashion Month in full swing, it’s time to get inspired by next season’s favorite looks. Want to know how to incorporate the latest trends into your spring wardrobe, but without the hefty price tag? Read on to see what you should be wearing right now…

Romantic
SS16 focused heavily on romanticism, as ruffles, lace and floaty floral numbers dominated the catwalk. Shows such as Roberto Cavalli, Michael Kors, Miu Miu and more all included ruffles, while some designers displayed distinctly latin influences. To incorporate the romantic trend into your look next season, look out for rose prints, feminine silhouettes and lace detailing. This is one key trend that will never get old.

Sparkle & Shimmer
It was a super sparkly catwalk this season, as sequins and shimmery fabrics glimmered and shone in a number of shows. From Lanvin’s dazzling, sequin studded shift dresses, to Tom Ford’s glitzy sequin block colour designs. Add some glamour to your wardrobe this spring, by pairing a sequin skirt with a basic top, to balance out the look.

Give it The Cold Shoulder
Off the shoulder tops were hard to miss this season, as designers such as Edun, The Row and Proenza Schouler showcased various versions of the style.  This is an easy look to incorporate into your summer wardrobe. Wear an off the shoulder top with jeans and a denim skirt and hat for a casual day look. To transition to an evening look, change to jeans and heels, finishing off the look with a clutch bag, necklace and slick up do hairstyle.

Denim
Yes, designer denim was indeed a trend on the SS16 catwalk, from Chanel, to Fendi, to Alexander Mcqueen. We saw denim dresses at Chanel, embroidered denim at Mcqueen and even double denim at Fendi and Chloe. If the thought of double denim makes you want to run a mile, it’s actually pretty easy to achieve, without looking like an idiot. Just make sure that the denims are a different shade. The perfect example is a denim shirt paired with a darker denim wash of jean. Throw in some accessories and a blazer to break up the look.

Tie-Dye
The tie-dye look has been given a contemporary come back, as we saw designers like Altuzarra, Emilio Pucci and Valentino bring this nostalgic 70s style to life. It took many forms, from all over tie dye, to washed out looks and minimal tie-dye detailing.

Silver
Silver metallics were spotted a lot this season, as they were shown in reflective leathers and crumpled silks. We saw a futuristic take at Louis Vuitton, a cracked mirror effect at Loewe, and in a sport luxe hoodie at Paco Rabanne. Metallics can be tricky to introduce to the wardrobe, but if in doubt, it’s easier to start with accessories, such as these Michael Kors slip ons. When wearing silver, go minimal with the rest of your outfit, to avoid clashing, unless the metallic isn’t too overbearing.

Street Style
From backpacks making a big comeback, to utilitarian boiler suits, the streets have spoken, and the catwalk is paying full attention. Why not mix things up with a smart blazer and leather backpack, or a boiler suit and heels.

Suede
Another big part of the 70s trend that dominated  the catwalk this season was suede. It appeared in Balmain’s show, as well as Jonathan Saunders and Rebecca Minkoff. Plenty of high street stores are selling suede skirts at the moment, so make the most of the choice while you can. For a casual look, pair a button down suede mini skirt with trainers or brogues. Switch to suede knee high boots for the evening, complete with a 70s off the shoulder blouse.

Pleats
Subtle pleating made its way onto the catwalk this season, as we saw various takes on the trend. Altuzarra, Tome, Boss and Proenza Schouler all showcased versions of the trend, in the form of floaty, feminine silhouettes. A pleated knee length skirt and off white shirt is a great combination to wear for springtime look. Or if you’re feeling more adventurous, you could go full on pleats, with a pleated dress and brown strappy sandals.

Graphic Stripes
Graphic stripes were seen all over the catwalk this season, as Missoni, Jonathan Saunders, Dolce & Gabbana and Roksanda, all showcased the trend. Don’t worry about them giving you the illusion of looking wide, because this stripe look is all about the vertical lines in bold primary colors. For spring/summer, you can incorporate this trend with a graphic stripe maxi dress, to elongate the body and flatter the figure. For a casual look, pair with a denim jacket and strappy sandals. Finish off your look with a drawstring boho bucket bag.

Marled Knits
You wouldn’t necessarily think knits for spring, but the catwalk was full of cozy marled designs. From belted cardigans, to cropped sweatshirts, it’s a trend that colder countries can easily work with, and who doesn’t love a cozy piece of knitwear! For cold evenings, pull a cropped sweatshirt over your dress, for an easy casual look. This works especially well if your dress has a collar to enhance the neckline. If you’re stuck for style inspiration, Styled By Marie Claire has some great advice on putting the latest looks together.

So what’s your favorite trend of the season and how will you incorporate it into your outfits? It’s all about having fun with experimenting and seeing what works for you. There is no wrong or right, so enjoy finding out your spring style, and you can be as creative with it as you want. Bring on the summer!
