Trusting Instinct in the Transformational Process

Some transformations, especially those in nature, are easily witnessed. Time seems condensed, rapid development is actually seen and as a result, transformation happens right before our eyes. Several months ago, on a mini-getaway to the White Mountains in New Hampshire, a beautiful Luna moth came to visit. The Luna stayed attached to the deck post for close to eight hours. Out of curiosity, I searched the internet for more information about the Luna. I found that the moth lives for only about one week, doesn’t eat during that time (it actually has no mouth parts) and its primary goal is to find a mate to reproduce before dying. The Luna also instinctively knows what time in the evening to find a mate.

In reflecting about this experience over the past few months, I have realized how much can be learned from the instinctual happenings in nature. I thought about how the Luna instinctively knows what it needs to do. Although it is not aware (or maybe it is) that it will only live for a week, it acts with urgency and purpose. It is not afraid of what will come or the obstacles that might be in the way – frankly, it doesn’t have the time to worry about those things. It is connected to its natural purpose and it trusts that it will know what to do and when.

In going through my own constant transformations in life….I inspire to be more like the Luna. After all, time is only a construct. A Luna lifetime or a human lifetime, a week or 75 years….does it really matter how much time we all have if we are not acting with purpose, urgency and passion? Does time really matter if it is spent worrying about the obstacles that may never come to pass? How connected am I to my natural instinct to know what to do and when to do it?

The Luna is one example of the many gifts in nature that we have been given as reminders to who we are and what we are here to do. Humans are, like all other living things in this world, BEINGS. The answers are usually right in front of us if we are observant enough to see it. Trust your instinct and act.
