What to Do After a Media Interview

You breathe a deep sigh of relief. Your big interview is finished, and you can relax. The story is not going to be published for a few months so what you do now?

Well, as much as you’d like to tell all of your customers, family and friends, right away, there are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Shhh. Don’t Say Anything.

This may be difficult, but it’s important to keep your media interview a secret right now. Why? Well, you are not in control. The publisher, producer or editor may drop the interview at the last minute due to breaking news, advertising space or a multitude of other reason. Because of this, it’s best to stay quiet until your interview goes live. This way, you can avoid embarrassment.

  • How Did You Do?

As soon as you finish your interview, review your performance. Did you give appropriate answers and promote the right message about your company? Did you provide contact information so that people who see or hear the interview can get in touch with you easily?

Write down all of the things that you did well and the areas where you need improvement. Then, review your notes prior to your next interview. This way, you can constantly improve your interview skills and confidence levels.

  • Get Back to Work.

When you finish an interview, write down the publish date on your calendar, and go back to business as usual. Concentrate on accomplishing current goals and growing your business.
Continue to write valuable content, pitch media-members new stories and reach out to current and potential customers. After all, if you spend too much time focusing on your interview, you may miss other, sales and promotional opportunities.

  • Focus on Business Priorities.

A potential, big story in a targeted media venue can be very exciting. But instead of focusing on the interview, keep it quiet, review your interview skills and move on with your business priorities.
This way, you’ll keep your sales and promotional activities going so that you can score additional interviews and new business. And who knows? You may open your favorite magazine one day and be pleasantly surprised at your interview and photo staring back at you!
