A Concise Strategy For Training Your Staff

If there’s one thing that business science has shown, it’s that training your staff is important. Companies that train their staff to a high standard report having the greatest productivity and being happiest. But these days conditions in the marketplace are changing all the time. That means that it’s rare to find staff who possess the exact skills you need. Outside workers often lack the exact skills you seek. And current employees often need to adapt to new protocols and procedures.

So what can you do to help your staff become more effective workers in an ever-changing environment?

Promote A Culture Of Learning
Learning is sometimes tough and often employees just want to get on with the job in the way they think is best. What they think is best isn’t always best, though. So this is why it can help to make learning part of work. Stress how training actually makes them more valuable employees.

It is also important that they know that you have high expectations for them. When they’re striving to achieve a high standard, they’re more likely to appreciate training.

Choose The Right People For The Job
There are a lot of training companies out there, but you need to be selective in who you choose. Perhaps your industry relies on effective weights and measure standards, for example. This is where something very specific, like ISO training, might be really beneficial. Or perhaps your business needs some help managing its processes, in which case you may choose something more general. Maybe you have a poor health and safety record and need to improve staff safety awareness.

Be aware that there is a large discrepancy throughout the business training industry. Standards vary enormously from one provider to another. Getting trainers who can motivate and inspire your employees is important. If staff are engaged in what they’re learning, they’re far more likely to succeed in their training.

See Training As An Investment
Training your staff is a little bit like buying a new machine or increasing your floor space. It’s an upfront expense that will pay you back over time in increased production efficiency. it’s an investment, in other words.

And like any investment, you want to make sure you get the maximum return for your money. Choose the type of training you feel will get you the biggest payback. Each time you undertake a new training program,  ask yourself a question: is this something that is going to make my business more effective?

Measure Success
Then, once you’ve made a decision to begin a training program, think about how you might measure its success. If safety was bad before the program started, compare it to safety afterward. Try to figure out what the improved safety is worth financially.

The same goes for anything that is designed to improve staff productivity. If you were servicing one item per hour, has this increased to, say, 1.25 items per hour?

Demonstrating results from training can help rationalize the expense. It can also give your firm a reason to continue training in the future.
