Authentic Networking

Whether you have a preference for introversion or extraversion, you can be successful at networking, if you are interesting and are interested in others. What do I mean by this?

First, you can find a style of networking that fits you. Read my prior blog on this.

Second, you understand the reciprocal nature of networking – it’s equally important to offer value to others as it is to ask others for what’s of value to you. Be genuinely interested in others… and what you can do for them. As Hazel Walker wrote in a recent Tweet, “Good Networking requires good conversation and that requires good listening. It is in the listening that the relationship is built.” You can’t know what’s of interest to others if you aren’t listening.

Third, cultivate an interest in world events, business trends, politics, sports, theatre, whatever will enable you to have interesting contributions to networking conversations. People want to talk to someone who is interesting! It’s particularly significant to someone if you have something to say about things that interest them.

Fourth, stay in touch with your personal and professional goals. Be prepared to make a Courageous Ask™ when appropriate.

Here’s an example of authentic networking in action. My friend Chris has a passion for sustainability. She recently had a chance to meet two prominent politicians, both of whom are very interested in sustainability. Chris was able to speak credibly about the economic stimulus package, it’s focus on sustainability and how her company could help. Chris made the courageous ask for business by explaining how her company could help. This opened very lucrative doors for future contracts.

So, find a style of networking that fits your preference for intro/extraversion, develop a genuine interest in others and cultivate interesting things to talk about (especially what’s happening in your organization’s business environment). Go forth, network authentically!
