Best Eco Beauty Brands Led by Women

In Gloria Steinem’s essay “Sex, Lies and Advertising,” she details a lunch meeting with Leonard Lauder (Estee Lauder’s son and then CEO) during which he tells her his customers are not Ms. women.

“They’re not interested in things like … blush,” she recounts.

Of the top 20 cosmetics companies, only Avon is headed by a woman.

But, the green beauty movement is creating space for lady entrepreneurs to stake claim in an industry raking in $7 billion annually from female consumers, alone.

Here are three of our favorite eco-beauty brands led by women.

(No coincidence at all that Monday was Earth Day – wink, wink.)

Red Flower. Founder and CEO Yael Alkalay is the granddaughter of Bulgaria’s first dermatologist and a former creative director for iconic Japanese beauty brand Shiseido. Red flower was created from the principles of world traditions, Alkalay’s love for the land and spirituality, as well as a sense for science and holistic medicine.

Editors’ pick: Moroccan Rose Revitalizing Sea Salt Scrub, $36, RedFlower.com.

Tracie Martyn. British-born New York beauty expert to celebrities, Martyn incorporates anti-aging technologies with treatments that are restorative, pampering and holistic. Oscar-winning actress Kate Winslet and 80’s pop icon Cyndi Lauper are fans.

Editors’ pick: Tracie Martyn Firming Serum, $185, TracieMartyn.com.

Sunday Riley. With a strong belief that modern skin care is the marriage between botanicals and biotechnology, founder and CEO, Riley integrates her family’s NV-5 Ageless Complex, a blend of five Native American botanicals used traditionally, with cutting edge green technologies. Hilary Duff and Leighton Meester are among her celebrity followers.

Editors’ pick: Good Genes Treatment, $105, Barneys New York.
