How to Get ‘Googled’
You know a strong online presence is vital for businesses to thrive. But it’s hard to attract new customers if your company is closer to the bottom rung on the search engine ladder than the top.
In honor of Independence Day, here’s how independent women entrepreneurs get their businesses to the top:
“SEO [search engine optimization] involves more than just the website,” Bobbye Brooks, co-founder of Media4Women, tells PINK. “Business owners should optimize their content in everything that’s released online.”
To do this, Brooks says use keywords and phrases specific to your niche market and geographic location on the site and in press releases rather than broad terms that will have millions of results.
“If your service is legal, don’t use the keyword ‘legal’ or ‘law,’” suggests Brooks. “Instead, use ‘personal injury law’ or ‘(city name) personal injury law.’” She adds that posting videos to your site, linking to other sites and having them link to you will up your traffic and search results.
For small businesses, experts suggest picking five to 20 keywords to use throughout the site, creating unique meta tags for each page, getting listed in directories and adding your company to Google Places.
Tools like Alexa and referrer logs help companies stay on top of their web traffic and monitor how visitors are finding their site, according to Business Insider.
If your company has a blog, other experts advise hosting it on Google-owned Blogger to up your chances of high search results. Plus, naming all of your photos with keywords will increase the odds of getting hits from image searches.
