Can Humility Hurt Your Career?

“We come nearest to the great when we are great in humility,” said poet and Nobel Prize winner Rabindranath Tagore. But humility and self-deprecating humor could hurt a woman’s career.

“In women’s attempts to be polite, they don’t let others know all they’re accomplishing and what we’re capable of – and in the process we damage our chances of getting ahead,” says Anne Marie Carlisi, principal at Carlisi & Associates.

While most men have no qualms about touting their contributions, women still cling to the myth that self-promotion is “socially unacceptable”, “unlady-like” and “morally suspect,” according to a recent study. But Carlisi says, “Others need to see that you are capable and that you know it. If you don’t believe in yourself – who will?”

Many women tend to deflect compliments. Instead, smile, look the person in the eye and say, “Thanks. Coming from you that really means a lot.”

While confidence is necessary for success, Psychology Today points out that “without humility it is impossible to feel and express gratitude, appreciation, hope, or empathy for others.” The key is finding the balance.
