When going from boardroom back to classroom (or to a more business-casual workplace), the last thing you’re probably thinking about is what to wear. While college attire is all about being comfy, you also want to look like the professional you are.
How to transform your wardrobe from business to casual – or back-to-school?
“Don’t ditch your working woman’s wardrobe, students!” Kristina Moore, editor-in-chief at Corporate Fashionista, tells PINK. “Rework it instead with just a few adjustments.” She suggests breaking up a suit by wearing the blazer with sturdy dark jeans and flats, or pairing the slacks with a belted blouse layered underneath a cardigan. “Jersey knit dresses will continue to be wardrobe staple,” Moore adds.
What new pieces are worth adding to your closet? Comfy wedges and/or flat boots, “so your feet endure all the walking between classes,” says Moore. She also recommends a well-constructed cross-body messenger bag, a water-repellant coat and a versatile military or bomber jacket.
Some schools have their own dress codes. Louisiana State University’s E.J. Ourso College of Business requires women to wear conservative shoes and dresses with straps that are at least an inch wide. Try pairing this retro (and modest) shift dress with a pair of opaque black tights.
What to avoid? Moore warns against more outdated looks, like pantyhose and super-conservative corporate suits. “When you appear fresh, modern and contemporary, so do your ideas.”
