Menopause Meltdown at Work?

You’ll go through it sooner or later – and at some point you’ll probably have to deal with a boss in the throes of it, too! We at PINK think it’s time to stop whispering about “The Change” and start getting the facts.

“I began peri-menopause in my middle 40’s,” says Robin Brower, agency principal of Right Track Insurance Agency. “It was difficult to handle and proved embarrassing on more than one occasion.”

Brower dealt with emotional changes, which she says, “aren’t tolerated in business,” and experienced hot flashes.

A study of menopausal symptoms found that 79 percent of working women experience forgetfulness, irritability and mood changes. Symptoms cannot be

prevented, but controlling blood pressure by eating whole grains and fruits can reduce the risk of long-term issues.

Hormone therapy can alleviate many menopause-related symptoms, though there’s an increased risk of stroke and blood clots. Natural options include aerobic exercise, 1000-1500 mg of calcium daily and reducing alcohol intake.

How did Brower handle it? Realizing hot flashes could be worsened by aggravated thoughts, she used a skill acquired during childbirth. “I found that if I closed my eyes and relaxed my muscles with my mind, it was easy.” (Check out these breathing exercises to alleviate hot flashes.)

Her best remedy? “Relax, laugh, and understand it’s probably worse for the next gal.”

Bonus PINK Link: Reducing the symptoms of menopause may be as easy as reducing stress.
