Is Smaller Smarter?

You’ve seen the data: only three percent of women-owned companies break the million-dollar mark. Well – sometimes it’s for good reason.

Denise Meng, CEO of Billboard Connection, defines success as “being able to operate my business with a cellphone and a laptop – from the deck of a boat.”

That’s partly why she’s kept revenue between $500,000 and $750,000 annually. A hands-on business woman, she prefers not to hire employees, wrestle with HR issues and payroll. “I know what I can handle to maintain my quality of life. I can make enough money without diminishing my love of the game because you lose that passion when you become an operations manager,” she says.

Other benefits of staying small include having more control, closer relationships with clients and lower overhead, says Sitepoint.com.

Are you looking to maximize profit or maximize happiness? Confusion can lead to the wrong path, says Businessweek.
