The Richer Sex? Women – the richer sex? We will be if trends continue. But even though it’s Equal Pay Day, don’t expect to see the increase in your next paycheck. “Nearly 40 percent of working wives out-earn their husbands,” bestselling author Liza Mundy, who penned the much talked-about book The Richer Sex, tells Little PINK Book. If the numbers continue rising at this pace, she says most working wives will out-earn than their husbands by 2030. Why the dramatic shift? “Education is a big factor,” Mundy says. As Little PINK Book has reported, women are already earning more bachelor, graduate and doctorate degrees. “There are economists who think the wage gap will eventually reverse itself in favor of women,” adds Mundy. While we aren’t close to parity in wages, politics or boardrooms yet, we’re seeing more push-back on discrimination – and changes are already evident. Women who are young, single and childless have been out-earning their male counterparts since 2010. And finally, more of corporate America is realizing women make the bulk of consumer purchasing decisions. The next step, according to Mundy, is getting companies to “recognize that women are breadwinners, and to pay them accordingly.” Bonus PINK Link: Who makes the purchasing decisions in your household?
