Tranquil Travel Tips

Between flight delays, unfamiliar cities and living out of a suitcase, traveling for work takes its toll.

Since we know anxiety can lead to illness and more, here’s how to beat stress while you’re on the road:

“Plan in advance. Give yourself an extra hour to get to the airport and make sure all electronics are charged and ready to go,” says Grace Belangia, a writer, editor and marketing professional who travels monthly.

She adds that bringing a Pashmina scarf and dressing in soft, dark (but not sloppy) clothes will keep you comfy.

“Check the hotel’s website for the best available rate prior to securing room reservations,” says Anne Maurice, director of sales and marketing for The Setai Fifth Avenue, a Capella managed hotel.

“Most hotels offer their best rate on their website, which alleviates booking costs.” She also suggests checking on what toiletries are offered by the hotel so you can skip packing them.

To avoid getting the dreaded middle seat, check out your plane’s chart on Seat Guru. Consider a Priority Pass for access to relaxing airport lounges.

MSNBC offers stress-busting tips like negotiating for more (like a paid hotel stay) if you volunteer to be bumped from the flight and bringing as few checked bags as possible to keep costs down.

Travel experts suggest memorizing your passport number, not worrying about expenses under $10 and packing everything in the same way every time so you’re less likely to forget items or leave them behind.

A pack of security checkpoint-friendly refreshing towelettes and a sleep mask that won’t smash eyelashes are small items that can add comfort. Plus, this small TSA-approved combination lock keeps valuables safe and secure.
