Currently, women are majority owners of an estimated 8.1 million U.S. businesses.
That got us thinking – if we have that kind of power now, imagine where we’ll be in 2030! (In addition to becoming the majority of breadwinners, that is.)
Experts say the power to define tomorrow’s female entrepreneur is largely “in our hands.” So, what will the woman business owner of the future look like?
When it comes to key qualities she’ll possess, they’ll include more risk-taking, being better connected and likely owning higher revenue enterprises.
And it’ll be all about effective communication. That’s according to Sally Williamson, president and founder of Sally Williamson & Associates.
“Tomorrow’s women owners will… work harder to attract and grow their client base,” says Williamson. “Historically, small businesses grew by reputation and referral. The Internet and social media [are leveling] the marketing playing field.”
Thanks to increased options, she says women “will stand out as thought leaders and build their reputation around insights rather than products.”
The best industries for women to start and grow their businesses will likely be Internet and information services, software, technical consulting and home health care, among others, according to Inc.
Based on workplace trends, there will be more men helping out at home, creating better balance for women. Williamson also foresees increased workplace flexibility, telecommuting and (finally!) more women in the C-suite.
