When you’re taking steps in your career and moving your way up the ladder, time off can seem like a big deal – especially when it’s not used to relax and take some moments to yourself. Moving house when you’re busy in your line of work can just be added stress, but sometimes it’s a necessity; your lease may have come to an end, you could have split up with your partner or you have to move for your job. The reasons are endless, but they are always there.

So how do you get round it?

Utilize friends and family. You could have a plethora of people willing to help you with your move, and you should take them up on any offers that they give. The more people that are there to help, the quicker the work will get done; this is not a case of too many cooks spoil the broth or three’s a crowd, this is a situation where you need the job doing fast and effectively. If you gather up a bunch of three or more people, the work will be over before you know it.

Hire some help. Don’t be afraid to look around for a good moving company to help assist you both on the run-up and on the moving day itself. They will be able to lift heavy objects such as furniture with ease – these are professionals with lots of experience, and your offer to help could potentially hinder their productivity. Sort out the minor details with the move while they take care of the big stuff.

Try and do it all in one day. If you are not dragging it out over the week, it’s less time that you are taking off work that could be put toward something a tad more rewarding. Get up as early as possible to move everything over to fully take advantage of all the time that the day has to offer you. You could spend your evenings doing small tasks like packing a box a day over a month so that you are not rushing around the night before, which means that you could be forgetting essential things like taking down utility readings and turning off appliances before you leave.

Build up your day off. If you really cannot spare the time, don’t have any annual leave to use up, or it isn’t able to happen on a weekend, see if your boss will allow you to work overtime in order to take off a day in lieu. This is more likely to happen if you are on flex-time or there is a relaxed approach to your working environment, but it could happen in other cases as well. As long as you prove yourself and the work is done, there should be no logical reason for them to deny you this. Otherwise it may have to be an after-work schedule that will have to be put into place to get you moved over in any time that is available to you.
