His Closet, Her Style

A recent study reveals 30 percent of young women identify their personality as part-male, part-female. So, can women sometimes dress like “one of the guys” and still retain femininity? Yes!

“You can be strong-willed and assertive and still be feminine and fashionable,” Robanne Schulman, fashion guru, celebrity stylist and owner of Plaid Monkey, tells PINK.

“Take the classic sports jacket, pair it with a dressy top and pair of high-rise pants and you get a great boy-meets-girl look.” Schulman adds that designers are beginning to show collections with a more androgynous look.

So, how can you walk the line? Schulman suggests using “shades of cream and peach with traditional colors like black and white” to keep your look up-to-date.

We don’t foresee men working in heels anytime soon. What should be left to the guys? “Avoid pleated trousers and overpowering bowties,“ Schulman says.

Women can experiment with plenty of typically masculine looks, from expert tailoring and muted patterns to minimal accessories and stylish loafers. We like these looks from collections of The Row and Chloe. Celebrities like Winona Ryder, Jane Lynch and Diane Keaton embrace the androgynous style.
