Why do you wear makeup? Most probably to achieve a more flawless look. You want your complexion to appear even and smooth, and your skin to look bright and beautiful, which is why you opt to wear makeup on a daily basis. The chances are that you’ve most probably got your makeup application spot on. But, what you haven’t perfected yet is getting your makeup to stay in place all day. (This is something that most of us struggle with, as there’s a real art to perfecting longevity.)

While you could just re-apply throughout the day, when you’re busy, there’s no time for that. You need to find a way to keep your makeup in place all day, regardless of what you’re doing. You might think that by buying the best quality products you can ensure your makeup stays looking flawless all day, but sadly, that’s not the case. Even that pricey designer makeup rubs off throughout the day. The key to keeping your makeup in place for over six hours isn’t the quality of your products, but the little things you do to ensure they stay in place.

To ensure your makeup stays in place all day, here’s what you need to do:

Always use primer. The most important rule of keeping your makeup in place all day is never skip primer. It’s not just a paste that will smooth out your skin and fill those pesky fine lines; it’s so much more than that. Primer is the glue that holds your makeup in place, so it’s essential that no matter what, before applying your makeup, you pop on some primer.

The big mistake that many of us make with primer is thinking that it’s a one-size-fits-all type of product. Believe it or not, it’s not. Just like foundation, there are different primers for different skin types. If, for example, you suffer from oily skin, an oil-free primer is a must. Or, if you have dry patches that affect your makeup, opt for a primer that offers hydration.

Buy long-wear makeup. If you want makeup that will last all day, buy long-wear products. They might cost a little more, but as the name suggests, these products have been made for longer wear. Don’t just buy any old product, though, as the cheaper ones can look a little heavy. It’s best to spend a little more to get a long-wear product that’s both light and long lasting.

Layer it. One of the best things you can do to ensure that your makeup stays in place all day is layer it. Instead of applying your base makeup in one thick coat, it’s best to layer it. Pop a light layer on first, and then subtly build it up until you have the perfect level of coverage. This will not only help your makeup to stay in place for longer, but it will help to make it look more natural.

Set your makeup with powder. Once you’ve finished applying your makeup, it’s important to set it with powder. If you want it to last for as long as possible, it’s crucial that you set it in place using a pressed or loose powder. Instead of using a pencil eyeliner, always use liquid. Kohl eyeliner easily rubs off, but liquid liner is much harder to smudge, especially if you opt for a waterproof one. For your mascara, it’s also a good idea to go waterproof, to ensure that it stays looking good for as long as possible.
