Professional Party Nerves

Holiday party season is officially here!

Dreading it? You’re not alone.

If you’re an introvert you especially know what we’re talking about.

So, what’s a wallflower to do at office parties?

Introverts have great qualities like listening, observing, and connecting individually. “Value those – they’re beautiful,” says inner-confidence coach, Jeannie Campanelli.

Before the party, try setting goals – a small step to accomplish. Choose something that may take you out of your comfort zone but also makes you happy – like meeting one new person or connecting with a couple of people.

“Often the entrance is the most nerve-wracking part,” says Campanelli. “Don’t feel pressured to talk immediately.”

Conquering nervousness starts with being aware of it. “Be still and take in the room. Connect with yourself first, not as you think you should be, but as you are,” she suggests.

Getting involved is one way to take the attention away from yourself.

Lend a hand to the host. “Focusing on others keeps you from dwelling on your own anxiety,” says Campanelli.

Above all, be genuine, not contrived.

“You won’t make a good impression by pretending to be someone you’re not,” she says. “When you’re being yourself, your strengths naturally shine through.”
