The average tax refund is $2,899, down from $2,985 in 2011. If you still managed to get one, the question now is: what to do with the extra cash?
If you decide against practicality (like stashing it in your savings or retirement plan), why not invest in a warm-weather staple for the office?
You earned it, after all.
“I’m all for a great third piece – that lightweight, stylish sweater or wrap you can pull out when in overly air-conditioned places or on planes,” says Manisha Thankor, a Shop It To Me consultant.
“One high quality piece in this area goes a long way.” No matter how much you got back, Thankor says you have plenty of options.
If you prefer to spend minimally, she suggests stylish, affordable accessories (like this Kate Spade bracelet) in trendy colors.
If you can spend a little more, consider a classic pencil skirt or this Rachel Pally wrap dress that goes with virtually everything.
Feel like (and can afford) a splurge? Go for a signature handbag, like this one from Marc Jacobs, that you can wear every day.
Think investing in fashion is frivolous? “[You can] buy less, but buy the best you can comfortably afford.” Thankor says that means being able to pay for it in full – and no credit card debt.
“In a tough job market, looking put together really is an investment in your career.”
Closet already bursting at the seams? You can opt for another worthwhile purchase like an iPad, new mattress or weekend getaway instead.
