The Ashida Onrae Show Becomes a Reality for Goal-Oriented Woman
Have you ever wanted to be the next “Oprah Winfrey” or be a host on one of those “hip” entertainment shows? Well, while many of us may be wishing for fame, fortune and our own talk show, one bright young woman is doing something about it.
Meet Ashida Onrae. She is making her dreams a reality by starting her own business and talk show.
I recently talked to Ashida, and here’s what she had to say…
Tell us why you decided to start your own television show and what your goals are for the show.
My decision to start my own show was based out of frustration. I longed to become a TV Host on Good Morning America, Access Hollywood, Entertainment Tonight, etc. While I was submitting and booking myself for gigs (I currently don’t have a hosting agent), I would ask for copies of my work so I could make a sizzle reel. My reel was my ticket in the door to obtaining a hosting agent. However, several weeks went by waiting for copies of my work. Those weeks turned into 3-4 months.
So one day, out of pure frustration, I decided that I was going to put myself on TV, book my own guests and essentially produce my own show like Good Morning America or Access Hollywood. I knew that I had to be in charge of my own destiny and could no longer wait, so The Ashida Onrae Show was born.
My goal for the show is to book amazing guests (celebrities and non-celebrities) to share their amazing stories of courage and how they overcame personal and professional challenges in hopes to inspire, encourage and uplift my viewers so they too can pursue their dreams and goals.
How are you marketing and promoting your new show?
Well, my producer and I decided to go on a speaking tour. We will start with state and junior colleges to inspire the youth. We will also pursue online universities to inspire the adults who are going through a career shift or going back to school to fulfill their life-long dream of finishing college and starting a new career or continuing their education.
What advice do you have for women who are hitting roadblocks in their life?
When you hit a roadblock, take the time to step back and look at the situation. Instead of quitting or giving up, decide from that moment that you will be a solutionist. Because there will be roadblocks in each stage of your career, and as you continue to pass each stage, you’re exercising your problem-solving muscles to keep you moving forward. Ask for advice and surround yourself with people who are willing to help and assist you.
They say it takes a village to raise a child. Well, it takes a village (strong friendships) to help you through life. Once you have that, and the strength to endure and attack each roadblock in life, you will soar.
Do you have some tips you can share for managing time?
Yes, stop watching TV. Stop scrolling FB, Twitter and Instragram all day. Is “liking” someone’s status helping you get to where you need to be? Is sharing certain tweets helping you gain important followers that will help you grow your business?
We spend too much time doing nothing that will help us achieve greatness. I’m on FB, Twitter and Instagram. But it doesn’t consume my time because I’m too busy sending e-mails to agents and publicists to book guests. I’m too busy meeting with potential sponsors for my show.
Each day, I write down my to-do lists. And I give myself a time limit on when to complete them. For instance, if I have to call or e-mail five publicists to see if I can lock in guests for my show; my start time is 9:30 am, and my deadline to complete this task is 10:00 am. By the time 10:00 am hits, I’m on to my next task and so on. When 5pm hits, I’ve knocked out all my to-do lists for the day. If I was unable to accomplish my goal, I put it on the top of my list for the next day.
When you’re using you’re time wisely, you’re not wasting time. Nothing feels worse than looking at the clock and it’s almost 6pm and you say to yourself, “I didn’t get anything done today!” You have to constantly be aware of your time and how you spend it.
If you have a business where you have meetings with clients, set your meetings to only Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Or whichever day is easier for you. That way, you have Monday, Thursday and Fridays to accomplish your goals while also setting up new ones with potential clients.
Setting appropriate times and deadlines help to manage your life as a career woman with family and friends. It’s a lovely feeling when you can make happy hour with your girls!
Is there anything else you would like to share with other businesswomen with big dreams?
Find a way! No matter what obstacles you face (because you will face many) find a way. I didn’t give up. When I first started out with The Ashida Onrae Show, I didn’t say I don’t have any money, I can’t do this.
I paid off all my bills, worked hard and saved my money. I didn’t say, I don’t know a film crew that can come and shoot my show for me. I went out and searched for one. I didn’t say, I’m starting out and no one is going to interview with me. I read every magazine to look for inspirational stories as content for my show and used the friends and contacts that I had to book guests.
I always found a way to make it happen. I have a circle of friends who are strategists, entrepreneurs, and go-getters who helped me along the way. Live and be an example of “this is how you achieve your goals and get things done!” Be the example so people are inspired by you.
Thanks for the inspiration Ashida!
