The Culture Club

Women-owned businesses are leading the way in future job growth.

As a result, we’re seeing changes in the work environment, like an increased focus on employee opportunities and customer service.

Data shows women own 10.6 million businesses in the U.S. and employ almost 20 million workers.

Plus, we know the women owner’s presence in the global economy is increasing as well. The question is: how can you ensure your business culture grows with it?

“Women have a unique set of skills and thought processes to make things happen,” says Jean Marie Brittingham, founder of SmartGirls Way and co-author

of The SmartGirls Way.

This, she says, is a main reason more women are turning to entrepreneurship – to create their own women-friendly environments from the start.

“We’re seeing more women seeking other women [employees] from the beginning, which increases social equity and often, capital.”

What characterizes a woman-friendly culture? These environments often favor a horizontal vs. vertical hierarchy and are highly results-driven. Experts say creating your own involves fluid communication, more diversity, clear promotion policies and a pipeline to leadership opportunities.

MSN adds this business culture is no less demanding or productive than traditional ones, but that there is often more flexibility and mentor opportunities.
