A Future in Finance?
The newest industry where women are dominating: finance.
We make up more than half of advisors, accountants and auditors, according to Catalyst.
Plus, data shows women prefer women over men with it comes to managing their money.
What helps them get ahead?
Eileen McCaffrey says it was was getting the inside scoop from those in the field about what they do. She’s now SVP of Wells Fargo’s Internet Services Group.
Her top tip? “Don’t be shy about asking questions, even in situations that don’t immediately seem like career networking opportunities,” she says.
In addition to a solid educational foundation, McCaffrey says well-rounded training classes in business, marketing, education, human resources, foreign language, computer science and even psychology will enhance your skills.
Think some of your outside experience won’t translate? “If you’ve led a team to victory, worked as a volunteer raising money for a school or nonprofit [organization], all these extra curricular experiences help,” says McCaffrey.
Others suggest narrowing down which area of finance is the best fit – like banking, accounting or loan management. When it comes time to job hunt, sites such as Careers in Finance can point you in the right direction.
