Kids and Money

While passing through a toll booth this week, I heard my 4-year-old in the back seat yell, “Throw more quarters, Mom!” I was hit by a “teachable moment” and I didn’t know where to begin.

Since that day, I’ve started saving coins (heck, I’ve tried even to start USING coins – I normally swipe plastic for all my purchases to facilitate expense tracking, but I fear my kids aren’t understanding any difference between the cost of an ice cream and that of a refrigerator). Now I’m going to try to teach the kids about the different coins, then take them shopping to see what they’ll buy.

Do readers have other ideas for teaching children – from pre-schoolers to adult children – about money? How do you start? Where have you gone wrong? What have you done right?
