5 Things to Remember – When You Interview For a Job!

As workplace experts, PINK is often interviewed on topics like this for other media outlets. Just recently we were asked to share tips on what to do during your job interview. Also PINK recently hired a new head of finance. I was very surprised that nearly every job candidate made obvious mistakes! So here are five very basic things to remember when you go to your next job interview.

1. Wear a suit (You may not need or want to wear a suit on the job – but your prospective employer needs to know that you at least have one that you can pull out of the closet for a client meeting.)

2. Know something about the company One of our job candidates, on the way out – after the interview, turned around with a big smile and said, “Oh – now I know who you are!” That’s too late. Research the company and know something about the person interviewing you prior to your meeting.

3. Bring your resume It doesn’t even need to be a traditional resume but your employer will absolutely need to know where you worked previously, positions you’ve held and something about your educational background.

4. Have references handy This shows you do have previous employers who are ready to speak up on your behalf. It can only make you look good, organized and proactive to offer this up.

5. Write a thank you note In this day of everything high tech and online, a simple hand written note of gratitude that someone took the time to meet with you will go a long, long way. I promise.

Join the conversation! What did you learn from the last job interview you went to or conducted?
